Program overview

The Carpentry Helper Grant Program at Del Mar College is a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)–supported training program designed to prepare individuals for entry-level employment in the construction industry.

This short-term, grant-funded program provides participants with the foundation, skills, and safety training, along with work readiness competencies needed to secure employment as a carpentry helper and related construction occupations.

This program is grant-funded through workforce development resources for individuals who meet eligibility requirements; and provides students with occupational skills training, employability skills, career services support and opportunities to engage with employers in local industries.

Program Purpose

The Carpentry Helper Grant Program addresses local and regional workforce needs by preparing participants for high-demand, high-growth construction occupations. Training is aligned with employer expectations and focuses on equipping participants with job-ready skills that lead to employment.

Training Outcomes

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic carpentry and construction skills.
  • Safely operate hand and power tools used in construction settings.
  • Apply basic construction math and measurement techniques.
  • Follow job site safety standards, including OSHA standards.
  • Communicate effectively and work as part of a construction team.
  • Meet employer expectations for entry-level construction employment.

Career pathways

This program serves as an entry point into a construction career pathway, preparing participants for positions such as:

  • Carpentry Helper
  • Construction Laborer
  • Framing Assistant
  • Maintenance or Facilities Support

Participants may advance to apprenticeships, advanced carpentry training, or other skilled trades programs that can lead to a Level 1 or Level 2 Certificate.
