Program overview

Del Mar College can help you get job ready by preparing you for a career in the construction industry.  South Texas is in need of workers in the construction trades and to address this need Del Mar College is offering a comprehensive program to prepare you for employment.

Construction skills training courses:

  • Offer practical experience in the various construction trades
  • Are taught by experienced instructors. All of our instructors have decades of real-life experience in their respective fields.
  • Offer hands-on learning. You will learn how to use the hand and power tools used in the various trades.  This includes pneumatic guns, and shop tools.  Mock ups and various training aids are used to help the student develop skills that are in demand in the construction industry.
  • Are also ideal for homeowners and landlords who want to learn basic knowledge about the different construction disciplines.

A Del Mar College Career Counselor will help you get in contact with contractors and companies in the construction industry. Many of our graduates get hired the day after classes are over.

Course offerings

All courses are short and fast. The carpentry course is 6-weeks long all other courses are 4-weeks long. Weekeand and evening courses are available.

Classes are offered in the following trades:

  • Carpentry: An introduction to the carpentry trade including safety, tools, equipment, terminology, and methods.  During this course the student will get hands on experience in all phases of beginning carpentry. Students will construct a multipurpose building, which will give them experience in basic framing, wall layout/construction, roofing, siding, and facia work.
  • House Wiring: Presentation of the theory of residential electric circuits. Topics include load calculations and safety in electrical work, installation of wiring, load protection, ground fault and other devices commonly used in 110- volt household applications.
  • Cabinetry: Design and construction of base cabinets and wall cabinets for kitchens and bathrooms. Emphasis on the safe use of portable and stationary power tools.
  • Plumbing: An overview of commonly recognized plumbing construction skills including pipes, math, print reading. Student will get hands on experience on how to install common plumbing fixtures.
  • Print Reading: The fundamentals of blueprint reading for the construction industry. Identify the importance and use of construction prints; identify the symbols, terminology, and standard abbreviations; explain the sequence of drawing organization; make the calculations and measurements relative to construction; and interpret construction drawings and scales.
  • Trim & Stairs: Installation of interior finish systems and components including the placement and installation of doors, trim, and molding. Emphasis on safe work practices, use, and maintenance of tools and equipment.

Admissions Requirements

  • Students must be 18 years of age
  • High school diploma/GED not required
  • Recommended minimum of 9th grade level math and reading knowledge

Program Cost

  • Each course costs less than $300.
