Program Overview
The Del Mar College Health Information Technology program provides course work to meet the educational requirements for certification in Health Information Technology and Medical Coding. The Health Information Technology Program offers a Coding Specialist Certificate, a 34-credit hour certificate program designed to prepare students to understand medical concepts, terminology and accurately code medical records for hospitals, physician offices, clinics and other health care providers.
Accurate coding is critical to health care providers due to its effects on reimbursement, compliance requirements and other federal and state regulations.

Receiving Academic Credit Hours
All courses in the Health Information Technology Workforce Skills Award (WSA) program have the option to be converted to credit hours using a Petition to Record Credit form. All courses can also lead into the Del Mar College Health Information Technology Association of Applied Degree, Certificate.
Admissions Requirements
- Students must be 18 years of age
- High school diploma/GED not required
- Recommended minimum of 9th grade level math and reading knowledge
