Behavioral Intervention Team

The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) addresses disruptive, threatening, or worrisome behaviors that may impact campus safety.

Understanding the Role of the BIT

• To respond to reports of violence or threatening behavior
• To quickly assess and address behaviors that pose a potential risk to self or others
• Notify, within FERPA guidelines, parents, guardians, and/or next-of-kin when necessary
• Identify resources and make referrals to appropriate campus and off-campus agencies

Team Structure and Response Process

The BIT consists of College personnel with expertise in law enforcement, threat assessment, academic affairs, and student affairs. When investigating a potential threat, a core team of four campus leaders, chaired by a representative from the Student Engagement & Retention Office, will assemble to manage the investigation and make a determination regarding the level of threat. The BIT Team will meet on an emergency, or as needed, basis to review reports of concerning, disruptive, inappropriate, and/or threatening behavior brought forward by faculty, staff, and/or students. The BIT maintains a safe campus environment by identifying, assessing, and responding to the campus community members exhibiting concerning behaviors.
