“I always knew I wanted to be the first in my family to pursue higher education, not just for myself but for the generations before and after me.”

How did DMC help set you on your course to achieve your dreams?

“DMC helped me find direction during a very important turning point in my life. I come from a family of immigrants from Jalisco, Mexico, and my parents’ highest level of education is elementary school. As the oldest, I always knew I wanted to be the first in my family to pursue higher education, not just for myself but for the generations before and after me.

“When my youngest brother passed away at the age of 19, in July 2022, everything in my life shifted. That loss pushed me to think about my future differently. I realized I needed to build stability, strength and independence, especially for my children. I wanted to know that if anything ever happened to my husband, I would be able to provide for our family and stand on my own.

“My husband, who works in the oil and gas industry, was actually the one who helped me discover the Environmental Petrochemical Lab Tech program that aligned with my interests. Then my professor, Mr. Gallegos, encouraged me to explore Environmental Engineering and Quality Assurance. That support helped me take the first steps.

“DMC became the place where my journey truly began. The supportive instructors, hands on courses and encouraging environment helped me believe in myself again. DMC turned a painful moment in my life into a purpose-driven path toward my dream career.”

What is your best memory from your experience at DMC?

“The best part of my experience at DMC was how supported I felt. My instructors truly cared about my success, and the environment helped build my confidence as a first-generation student. Receiving a scholarship was also a huge blessing; it reduced financial stress and motivated me to keep going. DMC gave me encouragement, opportunity and a strong academic foundation.”

What advice would you give others who may be considering attending DMC?

“My advice would be, start here, because DMC will meet you where you are and help you grow. Whether you’re unsure of your major or already have a goal in mind, DMC gives you the foundation to succeed. Take advantage of tutoring, talk to your professors and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’ll be surprised at how many opportunities open up when you put yourself out there. DMC is a great place to begin your journey, no matter what stage of life you’re in.”
