Program Overview
The Biotechnology curriculum is designed to prepare students for a career in the biotechnology industry. There are various careers in the biotechnology industry including but not limited to: biomedical or laboratory technicians, biomaterials specialists, regulatory specialists, bio-manufacturing technicians, clinical research associate, forensic science specialists, environmental health specialists, and agricultural biotechnologists. The program is also designed to provide opportunities for job advancement and retention for individuals currently employed in the field.
Coursework emphasize the laboratory skills including sterile techniques, laboratory mathematics, spectrophotometry, flow cytometry, recombinant DNA techniques, electrophoresis, genomics, bioinformatics, polymerase chain reaction, chromatography, protein characterization, ELISA, enzymatic assays, sequencing, microscopy, and cell culture techniques. Certain courses have implemented innovative research project such as PHAGE study and plant gene study. The Biotechnology program has also been recognized by Texas Workforce Investment Council. Another highlight of the Biotech program is every summer, qualified students are send to paid internship nation wide and get first hand research and work experience.
