Free On-Campus Childcare Opportunity

The Del Mar College Center for Early Learning currently has financial assistance available for DMC students! Children must be between 18 months and 5 years old. Childcare is from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Friday. For more information, contact Marcy Vargas at (361) 698-2381 or mvargas11@delmar.edu (reference: Childcare Scholarships).

HOPES Project

Are you a parenting student in Aransas, Bee, or Live Oak County? The HOPES Project offers free, supportive services for expecting moms and caregivers of children 0-5. From parenting tips to connecting you with resources, we're here to help! Reach out to Robin Soto (rs6590@bcfs.net) or Jessica Foss (js1718@bcfs.net) to get started.

Free Maternity Clothes

Gently used maternity clothes (sizes Small and Medium) are available! If you're interested, please contact the Pregnant & Parenting Student Liaison, Dr. Sara J. King, at sking10@delmar.edu to coordinate a time to stop by, browse, and pick up anything you need! Items are first-come, first-served.

What kinds of accommodations can I receive as a parenting student?

Students experiencing pregnancy or pregnancy related conditions are entitled to reasonable accommodations for the health and safety of their pregnancy. Students requesting each protection or accommodation under this policy can contact the Student Parent Liaison. Some examples of common reasonable accommodations include:

• Excused absences,
• Opportunity to make up missed assignments or assessments,
• Additional time to complete assignments in the same manner as is allowed for other temporary medical conditions,
• Pregnant students are provided access to instructional materials and video recording of lectures for classes which the student has an excused absence,
• A larger desk or different seating arrangements.

Are there scholarships or other forms of financial aid available for pregnant and parenting students?

Perkins Grant Funding might be available for single parents, including single pregnant mothers. Explore Funding Types and Requirements here.

The application for the DMC Foundation Scholarships opens every year and is available for students with a GPA above a 2.0. Some scholarships specifically aim to support parenting students. Begin Your Application Process here.

I feel that faculty/staff are discriminating against me due to my pregnancy. What can I do?

If you are experiencing incidents of pregnancy or parenting discrimination, you can submit a formal complaint to the Title IX Deputy Coordinator for Students or Pregnant & Parenting Student Liaison, listed below. Please be aware, to initiate the Title IX complaint resolution process, complainants cannot remain anonymous.

B7.34.1 Purpose and Authority

Del Mar College establishes this policy and related procedures and processes in its continuing effort to seek equity in education and employment, and consistent with its legal responsibility and authority to take measures to address, report, investigate, and prevent discrimination against students due to their pregnancy or parental status, as required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, as amended, 20 U.S.C. § 1681, et. seq.; Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e; Texas Education Code § 51.982 (Tex. SB 412).

This policy is intended to inform students of their rights if they are subjected to discrimination, including the complaint procedures and available support services.

B7.34.2 Statement of Policy

This policy protects student parents or legal guardians of children under 18 from discrimination including: requiring pregnant or parenting students to take a leave of absence or withdraw from the student's degree or certificate program; limit the student's studies; participate in an alternative program; change the student's major, degree, or certificate program or refrain from joining or cease participating in any course, activity or program at the institution.

B7.34.3 Definitions

• B7.34.3.1 Parenting student: a student who is the parent or legal guardian of a child under 18 years of age.

B7.34.6 Supporting Measures: Supportive measures are non-disciplinary, non-punitive individualized services offered as appropriate, as reasonably available, and without fee or charge to the complainant before or after filing of a formal complaint or where no formal complaint has been filed.  Supporting measures may include,  but are not limited to, counseling, extensions of deadlines or other course-related adjustments, modifications of work or class schedules, and leaves of absence.  Del Mar College must maintain as confidential any supportive measures provided to the complainant to the extent that maintaining such confidentiality will not impair Del Mar College's ability to provide the supportive measures.  The appropriate Title IX coordinator or designee is responsible for coordinating the effective implementation of supportive measures.
