Veterans Upward BoundTo Serve, Support, and Educate

The mission of Del Mar College Veterans Upward Bound Program, in support of the College and the Division of Student Engagement and Retention, is to provide U.S. military veterans with supportive services that will ensure they have the motivation and skills to enter and graduate from a post-secondary institution.

Free tutoring and academic instruction

Free TSI prep classes

$40 monthly stipends to active participants

  • Program eligibility

    • Be U.S Military veteran with at least 181 days of active duty service and a better than dishonorable discharge
    • Have a qualifying income level (based on family income and number of dependents) or be a first-generation college student (neither parent earned a 4-year degree) or demonstrate an academic need
  • Enrollment assistance

    Completing of college enrollment and admissions forms

    • Paid college applications
    • Retrieving academic transcripts (military and college)
    • TSIA registration and fees paid
    • Researching various schools' admissions policies and criteria
    • Researching programs of study and coursework
    • Assistance with registration of classes
  • Financial Aid counseling

    • Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) both manually or using FAFSA Express computerized software for faster processing
    • Understanding various financial aid options available including:
      • Pell Grants
      • Subsidized Student Loans
      • Unsubsidized Student Loans
      • Montgomery G.I. Bill
  • Career exploration

    • Career assessments that help you match your skills, talents, and ambitions to careers that are available to you
    • Workshops on training opportunities and specific careers
    • Exposure to labor market information including salary levels, job requirements, and qualifications/educational level necessary
  • Academic assistance

    • Academic Assistance to help you identify your academic strengths and weaknesses
    • Instruction in basic academic skills - reading, writing, math, science, foreign languages, and computer literacy
    • Academic tutoring on-line
    • Assistance in obtaining GED diploma
    • TSI and other entrance exam application and preparation assistance
    • Workshops on study skills and college survival issues.
