Careers and Employment Outlook

The Advanced Technology and Robotics/Mechatronics Program provides a strong entry-level, career pathway within a highly-skilled workforce area. According to Projections Central website’s “State Occupational Projections,” the Advanced Technology and Robotics/Mechatronics field and more specifically, the electro-mechanical technician occupation, is expected to increase by nearly 16% through the year 2026 with a projected growth rate of 210 new positions, an average of 150 openings annually, and a projected rate of 1,570 new jobs through 2026 within the state of Texas.

The local workforce development area labor market information indicates that the demand for Advanced Technology and Robotics/Mechatronics professionals is expected to increase by more than 12.9% in the next two years within the state of Texas, with an average hourly income of $29.71 or $61,800 per year according to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018). The expected growth rate is higher than the national growth average of 4%, due to the expanding industrial workforce within the Coastal Bend region of Texas. As additional refinery plants, such as ExxonMobil, are established and existing employers like Occidental Oil and Gas Cooperation continue to hire technologists, the need for a highly-skilled workforce is essential to fulfill the job openings in automation, robotics technology, and machine calibration.
