Retention Services

About Us and Our Services

Our Mission

Promoting both short-term (within semester) and long-term (semester-over-semester) student persistence by employing an array of services targeting the quality of student life and learning.

Overview of Services

Retention Case Managers (RCMs) incorporate multi-tier models of support - to include recovery programs and best-practice early alert warning systems - backed by appreciative advising theory with students experiencing situations that may impede academic success.

Student Self-Referrals

Students experiencing situations that may be impeding their academic success - to include having difficulty in balancing life's priorities with the demands of attending college - are encouraged to contact the Office of Retention Services at 361-698-1948 to schedule an appointment with a Case Manager.

Academic Recovery Program (ARP)

Within the ARP, RCMs again employ an outreach/connection/triage/linkage/follow-up sequence across a Start Strong/Stay Strong/Finish Strong framework with students on academic probation or suspension (cumulative GPA below 2.0) to raise their GPA and attain "Good Scholastic Standing" with the College.

Students on Academic Probation

Removal of the registration block requires you complete two (2) sequential steps:

  1. Complete a SmarterMeasure learning assessment. Log in as a First Time User; choose Comprehensive Assessment. Once complete, call 361-698-1948 to schedule an appointment with a Retention Case Manager.
  2. Visit a Retention Case Manager (RCM): Available on both the East and West Campus, RCMs stand ready to explore your learning assessment, individual circumstances, chart a course for improvement, and connect you with necessary resources as applicable.

Students on Academic Suspension

Removal of the registration block requires completion of six (6) sequential steps:

  1. Initiate Academic Suspension Appeal: pick up an Academic Suspension Appeal form "a.k.a The Blue Form" from the Registrar's office; complete Section I and Section II.
  2. Complete a SmarterMeasure learning assessment. Login as a First Time User; choose Comprehensive Assessment. Once complete, call 361-698-1948 to schedule an appointment with a Retention Case Manager.
  3. Visit a Retention Case Manager (RCM): Available on both the East and West Campus, RCMs stand ready to explore your learning assessment, individual circumstances, chart a course for improvement, and connect you with necessary resources as applicable.
  4. Visit your Program Advisor/Chair: Program Advisors/Chairs stand ready to provide individualized guidance to include repeating failed courses, general course selection, and impact of circumstances on your specific degree plan. Direct questions about Program Advisors to 361-698-1290.
