The Village at Del Mar College

A Mentoring Program for Del Mar College African-American Students

Mentoring is an integral part of the retention activities of "The Village at Del Mar College" and is designed exclusively to provide for a mutually satisfying experience for both the mentor and mentee. "The Village" matches mentors, with minority students who desire to experience a smoother experience within the educational environment.

A mentor:

  • Shares valued skills with a student
  • Educates the student by broadening his/her perspective
  • Supports the student and his/her academic and social endeavors
  • Provides opportunities for the student to become involved in campus and community activities
  • Encourages growth and achievement
  • Fosters activity in academic organizations and other leadership roles
  • Consistently serves as an available resource

Mentors help students develop:

  • Personal identification
  • Interpersonal competencies and relationships
  • Academic skills and intellectual competencies
  • Aesthetic awareness
  • Health, physical fitness, and recreation
  • Multicultural awareness
  • A sense of security in his/her status at Del Mar College
