Program Overview

This one-year program leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology. Graduates have a knowledge of surgical aseptic technique and application: familiarity with surgical procedures, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology and the ability to meet the needs of the surgical team in areas where they are qualified.

Program Expectations

The Surgical Technology Program prepares competent entry-level surgical technologist in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

curriculum

While there is no Surgical Technology degree above associate level that graduates might transfer into, the classes (other than SRGT classes) transfer toward more advanced degrees for those students wishing to continue their education in Nursing or other fields.

Program Accreditation and Credential

The Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). CAAHEP awards accreditation to Surgical Technologist and Surgical Assistant programs upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). ARC/STSA is the only CAAHEP-recognized Committee on Accreditation for education programs in surgical technology and surgical assisting.

The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) is a nationally recognized credentialing agency which provides professional certification of surgical technologists and surgical assistants. This certification promotes quality patient care in the surgical setting. Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the national certification examination and students who pass the examination become Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). Certification is accepted in all 50 states, and is good for two years between renewals.

In the State of Texas, the national certification exam is the mandatory credential. To be eligible to take the national certification examination a student must graduate from a CAAHEP accredited program, like the one here at Del Mar College.
