May 25 SBDC “Emergency Preparedness: Hurricanes” Workshop Featuring Expert Advice and Resource Accessibility

Article by: Melinda Eddleman

In August 1970, Hurricane Celia directly hit Corpus Christi. The Coastal Bend is overdue with nearly 47 years having passed since Coastal Bend residents and businesses have suffered the impact of a major hurricane.

On Thursday, May 25, the Del Mar College (DMC) Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a NO COST workshop, “Emergency Preparedness: Hurricanes,” covering disaster planning for small business owners.

The workshop runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 106 of the DMC Center for Economic Development, located at 3209 S. Staples in Corpus Christi. Lunch is included, and organizers will raffle off hurricane kits to participants who register online by 3 p.m. May 24. To register, visit www.seminarscc.com.

Questions? Call the SBDC at 361-698-1021.

The workshop is designed to give small businesses and other organizations the tools needed to stay in business, regardless of the type of disaster––large or small. Participants will learn about resources they can access to create an emergency preparedness plan to stay up and running. Also, “Emergency Preparedness: Hurricanes” will cover the impact those colossal storms can have on small businesses or organizations.

Emergency preparedness experts will provide information that small business owners need to prepare for this hurricane season, including KRISTV Chief Meteorologist Dale Nelson; City of Corpus Christi Emergency Management Coordinator Billy Delgado; Texas Windstorm Insurance Association & Texas Department of Insurance Ombudsman Manny Villarreal; and representatives from AEP Texas, SBP, Coastal Resiliency Network Initiatives and others.

This year’s workshop sponsors include lunch sponsor SCORE Corpus Christi and corporate supporters Citgo and H-E-B.
